A Community Tragedy
Dear Editor,

To the Wave subscribers and to the Rockaway Sports Association's fantastic supporters, again, thank you for making the 2007 NYC vs. Las Vegas Friendship Games a great success.

Before I continue I must express my true feelings and emotion regarding a TRAGIC event that happened a few weeks ago while we were on our way out to Las Vegas. My number one Student-Athlete when I started the Rockaway Sports Association, fifteen or so years ago, Michael Richard - son's life was snuffed out down in Washington, D.C. by again, another misguided person.

I returned from our great trip to read in the Wave as I was going to lacrosse practice last Friday; as I turned the pages, I sadly read Mike's story, I did not know, I had to read this in the Wave.

Just so everyone understands, Mike was my first captain in the RSA, he attended John Adams High School where he made All-City in football, received an athletic scholarship to Howard University, where he went on to attend Georgetown University, while assisting the U.S. Attorney's office down in Washington, D.C.

His father, Ralph Richardson, was and is like a father to me and the RSA. What I am getting at is that if you had to draw a young man's life on paper, you would draw up this FAMILY. Before I continue with our Las Vegas trip, I wish to ask all of the Rockaway Sports Association's sponsors to contact Congressman Gregory W. Meeks in his Washington office, 202-225-3461, and inquire regarding the status of this case.

I truly feel that the real spirit of the entire Rockaway community will assist me on this one. THIS ONE HIT REAL CLOSE. Please make the call. It's kind of hard to go on after trying to explain this. The trip was great, but not that great.

GREG CARTER PRESIDENT-ROCKAWAY

SPORTS ASSOCIATION
