Beach 131 Street Honors America

Marchers assemble for the Beach 131 parade to the beach.
The residents of Beach 131 Street celebrated the 17th anniversary of "Honor America Day" on July 4. They assembled at the crash site of Flight 587, with a solemn reading of the roll call of those friends and family who perished on 9/11 and 11/12/07. Band master Vince Murphy started the parade marchers off to the strains of great American band music at Old Glory Plaza. "Pete the Flag" raised the colors, as the throng recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang "God Bless America." Emcee Hank Iori greeted everyone and noted the events of the past year.

This year's gala was dedicated to the memory of Lyn Peters, a revered fixture on "the block" for many years, who passed away recently. Peters was the inspiration behind Pete the Flag.

The festivities ended with the "Star Spangled Banner," and refreshments were served.
