for larger version       PS/MS 105 Penny Harvest Gives To Local Charity
First-graders from Ms. Johnson's class and fourth-graders from Ms. Buckley's class collected 250 pounds of pennies. Students from the first, fourth and seventh grades, called the Bay Benefactors, made the important decision of choosing a charity. The group, facilitated by PS/MS 105's math coach Helene Schneider, researched mostly local organizations. The students wanted to help sick children, so they donated a portion of the Penny Harvest funds to The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.
The students decided, however, that the majority of the money should go to The United Methodist Center in Far Rockaway. The Center, directed by Minister Bernadette Logan, runs a soup kitchen that serves the community. Logan visited the school to speak to the students about the shelter. The children listened intently as she described her work and how the money they collected will help The Center's cause.
