New Surfing Beach Announced In Rockaway
By Miriam Rosenberg

Doug Parent, of the Surfriders Foundation, announces to his members the opening of Rockaway's second surf only beach from Beach 67 to Beach 69 Streets.
A new "surfing only" beach opened earlier this month in Rockaway, the Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed on Thursday.

Abigail Lootens, a spokesperson for the department, talked about the new beach designation.

"The new surf beach on Beach 67 to 69 [Streets] did open on July 6," said Lootens in an e-mail to The Wave. "Signs stating that it is a surf only beach have been posted with rules."

At a Surfriders Foundation meeting on Wednesday evening, Doug Parent announced to his members that Parks had officially opened the city's second "surfing only" beach.

"It's on the books," Parent said at the organization's monthly meeting. "It's an official surfing beach."

In April 2005, a ceremony heralded the opening of the city's first "surfing only" beach on Beach 90 Street in Rockaway Beach. Lootens said there would be a similar ceremony to celebrate the new surfing beach, but a date has not yet been scheduled.
