Stop Complaining, There's Plenty To Do In Rockaway

The one complaint that you hear most often in Rockaway (after the condition of the roads and beach access rules) is that there is nothing to do in Rockaway, even during the summer months. Even a cursory look at the "It's What's Happening" section of today's Wave, however, should debase even the most discerning resident of that false belief. This weekend's events include the Wounded Warrior events, The Steve Belson Memorial Swim and Music Concert, "South Pacific" at the Fort Tilden Post Theatre, as well as myriad events at Gateway National Park and Aviator Sports. The Rockaway Theatre Company will continue to present "South Pacific" for another week and then will ready the building for "Steel Magnolia's," which will open on August 10. The Rockaway Music And Arts Council has three more Sunset Picnic Concerts set: The Roadhouse Band on July 22, The Long Island Pops on August 5 and a Doo Wop concert featuring Kenny Vance and The Planotones on August 19. The RMAC will host its annual Fall Festival at Riis Park on September 8 and 9, along with the New York City Kite Festival, an event that has become one of the most popular of the summer. The same weekend, Floyd Bennett Field will host its "Fly-in," with historic aircraft from the airport's civilian and military past. The Rockaway Artists Alliance is once again running its kidsmArt program for kids at Fort Tilden. The Diamond Pros little league program will begin on July 16 for two sessions at the Fort Tilden fields. The Parks Department has flooded Rockaway with events this summer, including Dancing Under the Stars, a mobile fitness van, exercising on the beach, a sandcastle contest and more. There is something for everyone. Take a look at the listings and then go out and do something. It's always much better than staying home and complaining that there's nothing to do.
