Abbracciamento Visits PS 108
School Named In Her Late Husband's Honor

Frances Abbracciamento, longtime Rockaway resident and one-time School Board President of District 19, returned to her Brooklyn roots last week and visited the school that is named for her late husband, Sal Abbracciamento.

Abbracciamento visited PS 108 on Linwood Street in East New York, the school where her husband had attended as a child and later saved from early termination. In the early 1960s, the city decided to close several schools, including PS 108. When Mr. Abbraciamento found out, he focused the forces of a civic organization called CBENY and stalled the closing.

"Mrs. A." related the story of the school's second chance to the PS 108 students. She explained that various waves of immigration have been a factor in East New York for decades, and that the lesson of working as hard as you can and doing the best as possible is still relevant today.

It was with this sense of history that "Mrs. A" met Constance Hahn, the current principal of PS 108. Abbracciamento, appearing spry and nimble for her 94 years of age, went to many classes and implored the students to continue to strive for academic achievement. She asked the students to call her "Grandma Frances," and promised to return for the "moving-up"
