Cops arrested Ronnie Smalls on July 1 on charges related to the most recent battle in that war - a shooting on June 29 in front of 81-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the Hammel Houses complex. Katrina Shinn was sitting in the courtyard at about 4 p.m. on June 29 when she was struck in the right thigh by a stray bullet, allegedly fired by Smalls at a rival gang member.
According to court records, Smalls and another man who is still being sought by police, pointed handguns at Tylique Rollinson and a group of other people and fired several gunshots at them as they fled. One of Small's shots allegedly struck Shinn. Rollinson and three others were stopped by police in an automobile nearby the shooting scene. Rollinson had a gunshot wound to his leg. Charges are pending against Rollinson and his three companions, sources say. In June of 2006, Smalls was shot twice in the back as he walked in the Hammel Houses. Police sources at the time said that Smalls was "uncooperative" with detectives seeking to catch the person who shot him. Andrew Smalls, Ronnie's brother, was arrested in February for the murder of Latron Spurgeon, which took place on Fernside Place in Wavecrest.
In May of 2006, police officers patrolling the Hammel Houses found a gun in the possession of Ronnie Smalls. He allegedly fumbled the weapon and then handed it off to his brother Andrew. Both Ronnie and Andrew were arrested and charged in the incident, but the third brother, Cedric, who was present, was not arrested. Police sources told The Wave that the war over control of the cocaine, heroin and marijuana trade in Hammels is being fought between the GIB - Get It In Bricks (referring to bricks of heroin) and the bloods street gang. Smalls, a reputed GIB member, was allegedly targeting Rollinson, a reputed Bloods member, in the recent shooting.
