Point Breeze Volies Name Smith Honorary Member

Senate Malcolm A. Smith
State Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith was named an honorary member of the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday, June 24.

"I can honestly say that few honors have touched me as much as this one. Throughout New York State, volunteer firefighters are often the

first respondents on the scene, and each year are responsible for saving countless lives. It is difficult to put into words what this honor means to me," Smith said.

The Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1910, and received its charter as a Fire Department in 1976; it is the only volunteer fire department to have received such a designation in the last nine decades.

"I hope my designation will remind people of the need to support those individuals who volunteer their time to protect others, and to perhaps join the cause. We each have a role to play in society, and we should all do our part to make our communities better places to live," Smith said. "The contributions of our first responders are enormous."

Smith is only the fifth member of the public to have been honored by the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department in the past 20 years.

The others include: U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hines, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and Alton Waldon, Jr., Senator Smith's predecessor in the State Senate.

"For nearly a century, members of the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire

Department have placed their lives on the line to protect us. I look forward to continuing to support them for years to come," Smith said.
