Changes Continue To Affect Rockaway In Such Areas As Housing,Roads and Beaches

The city has begun the second phase of its redevelopment of the stores surrounding the Beach 116 Street subway station. Fashion Wave and The Last Stop Café reopened last week. This week marked the closing of the stores to the north of the station. They will remain closed, officials say, until the end of July.
New homes continue to spring up in the Arverne By The Sea complex. By the time the entire development is completed sometime in 2009, there will be more than 2,000 new homes in the urban renewal area. At the same time, both the YMCA and the new supermarket are being held up by the city bureaucracy, but should be underway shortly.
The new connector from Shore Front Parkway to Beach 67 Street will be open in the next week or so. That should take some of the pressure off motorists impacted by the closing of Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the same area. By the way, the new road will be called "Beachfront Road."
Red flags continue to line the Rockaway beachfront, denoting closed beaches. Some have been closed due to a Piping Plover population nesting on the beach and those will remain closed until late summer. Others, however, are closed because of a lack of lifeguards on duty, and that has become a major issue in Rockaway.
A new center mall is being constructed on Beach 73 Street, from Shore Front Parkway to Rockaway Beach Boulevard. No word yet on whether or not parking will be allowed on those center malls.
