St. Virgilius/B.C.A.C. Win CYO Girls Softball Title
By Coach Jim Kelly

The St. Virgilius/Broad Channel Athletic Intermediate Girls' softball team became the Queens CYO champions, after a 13-7 win over St. Joseph's last Saturday.

The girls finished the CYO season with a 10-2 record. The softball team won in the first round of the playoffs against St. Gregory and narrowly defeated St. Matthias, 2-1, .in a tough second-round nail-biter.

The championship game had the St. Virgilius Shamrocks face off against a very good team from St. Joseph.

St. Virgilius got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Christina Sullivan raced home on Shannon Minihane's RBI hit for a 1-0 lead.

St. Joseph's threatened to score with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning. Minihane, playing at third base, made a great unassisted double play which led to the Shamrocks keeping their slight lead.

St. Virgilius scored again in the third inning, with RBIs by Minihane and Katie Gill to up the lead to 4-0.

St Joseph's came back and plated three runs in the fourth inning but they lost momentum when Shamrock players Amanda Yodice, Patricia Kelly and Nancy Soliman combined to record the third out on a rundown, ending the inning.

St. Virgilius quickly responded by scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Sydney Acevedo knocked in a run and a three RBI hit by Caitlin Mammes increased their lead to 8-3. St. Josephs would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning for an 8-4 game.

In the seventh inning, the St. Vigilius girls opened up the score to 13-4 on RBIs by Christina Servello, Acevedo and a three run homerun by Caitlin Mammes.

Though St Joseph scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, it wasn't enough, as St. Virgilius sealed the championship by the score of 13-7. Minihane received the Maryann Burke Sportsperson Award for her outstanding play during the game.

St. Virgilius Coach Teri Bautz and Coach John Kelly would like to thank the girls for having a great season: Co-Captains Katie Gill, Patricia Kelly and Nancy Soliman; Sydney Acevedo, Courtney Gallagher, Regina Hemminger, Caitlin Mammes, Kaitlyn (Blondie) Manzi, Katie McIntyre, Shannon Minihane, Christina Servello, Christina Sullivan, Amanda Yodice and Amy Zeller.
