On Sunday, June 17, the Broad Channel Athletic Club/Jamaica Bay Little League Cadet Shamrocks from St. Virgilius Parish took on St. Gregory for the 2007 CYO Cadet Division Championship.

The championship was played at Juniper Park and the weather conditions were ideal for a great game of baseball. The Shamrocks mixed timely hitting and clutch pitching to defeat St. Gregory 7-5 to win the 2007 CYO Cadet Division Championship.

They came into the game with an overall record of 19-1, with the only loss coming from St. Gregory. The Shamrocks had advanced to the finals after a 12-6 playoff win against St. Josephs.

The Shamrocks began the game with hard-throwing right-hander Matthew Gericke on the mound.

St. Gregory's offense took charge, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to give St. Gregory a 2-0 lead, later increased to 3-0 by the bottom of the third inning.

In that inning, the Shamrocks offense began to wake up from their slumber. Tomas Krohn started things off with a lead-off walk and Keith Harnisher followed with a single. Steven Trudden got the Shamrocks on the board with a big two RBI double to ignite the offense. The Shamrocks loaded the bases, Anthony Ciambriello drew a walk and Anthony Cani was hit by a pitch.

With the bases loaded, Gericke came to the plate and singled Trudden home for the tying run. Matthew Holgate reached on an error, which led to Ciambrello to score another run for the Shamrocks.

Steven Ellis then followed with a huge bases-loaded single, which plated Cani and Gericke to give the Shamrocks a 6-3 lead.

Manager John Bil then brought in Steven Trudden in to pitch and he did an excellent job shutting down a strong St. Gregory offense. Trudden retired the first eight batters he faced with only one ball leaving the infield.

After picking up another run to increase the lead to 7-3, the Shamrocks were only three outs away from victory.

The bats of St. Gregory, however would not go down without a fight in the top of the seventh inning. With two runners on base, St. Gregory plated a two RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-5. Trudden kept his composure on the mound and caused St. Gregory to line out to Gericke, who scooped up a hard hit grounder and threw to first base for the second out.

With a man on second base and the tying run at the plate, Trudden was able to record the final out via the strikeout and the Shamrocks were crowned the 2007 CYO Cadet-Division Champions.

The success of this team was possible due to the contribution of the entire roster throughout the season. The players included: John Claudio-Bil, Johnny Wagner, Jesse Parente, Dominick Edison, Jay Edison, Thomas Cani, Jack Tubridy, Tomas Krohn, Steven Ellis, Matthew Holgate, Matthew Gericke, Anthony Cani, Anthony Ciambriello, John Galimi, Steven Trudden, and Keith Harnisher.

The Shamrocks are managed by John Bil and coaches Joe Traegler & Jim Trudden, who are extremely proud of these young men for achieving their goals on and off the field.

The entire team would like to thank their families; friends; and team sponsor; Miele Associates Inc., for their support throughout the entire season. The team will continue their season by participating in the 2007 Little League Tournament and also look to play in a summer league. Go Shamrocks!
