Police say that he had several deep cuts to his stomach. Emergency Medical Technician Kevin Morrone and his partner, Yonatan Klein were on the boardwalk as well. The had noticed the young man as he walked up the beach toward the boardwalk, holding his stomach and quickly brought him to the boardwalk, where they began to stabilize him and stop the bleeding.
"We had about 150 people surrounding us, and some of them were really hostile," he said. "Having worked in Rockaway for 14 years, I got used to it. I just had to keep working and do my job." Meanwhile, police sources say, two off-duty police cadets, a male and a female, told police that they had spotted the youth who did the cutting - later identified at Andrew Maldonado, 17, of 283 Shepherd Avenue in Brooklyn. The two told local officers that the assailant had put the knife in his back right pocket. Police officers quickly collared the teen and found the knife just where the recruits said it would be. Captain Charles Neacy, the commanding officer of the 100 Precinct was pleased with the recruit's actions. "We have two recruits who did an excellent job," Neacy told the community council on Wednesday night. "I wouldn't mind having them [in my precinct]." The injured youth was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. "He was in rough shape," Neacy said. "But he's going to pull through." A spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Maldonado, who is believed to be a member of the Latin Kings gang, was arraigned on Wednesday evening on charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of all of the charges.
He was remanded pending his next court date, which has been set for July 12.
