PAL Kicks Off Summer Play Street Program

This summer, New York City youngsters will be able to enjoy double dutch, nok hockey and basketball as part of the Police Athletic League's Summer Play Street Program.

The League will close off public streets, as well as take advantage of the city's parks and playgrounds, to provide children with safe and supervised areas to enjoy sports, arts and crafts, music and dance.

Besides designating public areas for the program, the League will also create day camps, as well as co-ed softball, baseball and t-ball teams.

Play Street, which is sponsored by the MetLife Foundation and the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, will also instruct children by recruiting education, recreation and cultural arts specialists.

The League kicks off its 2007 summer program in Queens on Monday, July 2. Services will be available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., throughout the summer.

Designated locations accessible to Rockaway youngsters are: Bayside Playground at Beach 104 Street; Macedonia Church at Beach 67 Street; the Carleton Manor Houses at Beach 73 Street; the Hammel Houses between Beach 84 and 86 Streets; the Redfern Houses at Redfern Avenue and Hassock Street; the Ocean Bay Apartments between Beach 56 and 57 Streets; and Beach 9 Playground at Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 9 Street.
