Celebrities and community volunteers gathered trash and debris to make the beach barefoot-friendly, just in time for the busy summer season. Sal Masekela, host of E! Channel's "The Daily Ten" and ESPN's "X Games;" actor Andrew Keegan (WB's "Related" and "10 Things I Hate About You"), who is also a producer and surfing enthusiast; Kristen Schaal from the new HBO show "Flight of the Conchords," and the rescue project's spokesperson Jill Cunniff, from the band Luscious Jackson, all came down to Rockaway's shores to participate in the efforts of Barefoot Wine and the Surfrider Foundation. The grassroots, non-profit environmental event is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans and beaches. Barefoot, a California winery, has been an active supporter of various organizations for the past 20 years. The company is committed to Surfrider Foundation's mission to improve coastal water quality, promote free and open beach access, preserve coastal ecosystems, and protect public beaches.
The next cleanup event will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii. For more information on the beach rescue project, visit Barefoot Wine's website at www.barefootwine. com/ beachrescue or the Surfrider Foundation's website at www.surfrider. org.
