RDRC Replaced By Police Athletic League As New Beacon Sponsor

After 16 years of support, The Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) will hand off its sponsorship of the Beacon Program at Goldie Maple Academy at PS/MS 333.

Instead, the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) has appointed the Police Athletic League as the Arverne school's new sponsor. The League will assume its new role this September.

"It is difficult to compete with organizations that are much larger and have a citywide presence," RDRC executive director Kevin Alexander said in a June 11 press release. "Although not being selected, we operated one of the most effective Beacons throughout the City."

For 16 years, the "RDRC Beacon Program" has assisted Arverne children through afterschool and weekend programs by providing services such as homework assistance, college preparation and cultural trips. Many Beacon participants have gone on to graduate from college and enter the business world as bankers, engineers and film producers.
