Rising Temperature Relief
Tips To Stay Cool And Energy Efficient

When Rockaway's sea breeze is not enough to cool down a scorching summertime peninsula, many residents look to cranking the AC to cool their homes.

While this method may lower a room's temperature, it is costly and not environmentally friendly. For relief from the heat, the New York State Department of Public Service proposes ways to stay cool without hurting your electric bill or the community's electricity reliability.

Residents can create a breeze in their homes by turning up household fans and turning down air conditioners. Be sure to take advantage of the peninsula's natural ocean ventilation by opening a window, but keep the shades down to banish extra heat from the sun's rays.

Take advantage of summertime cuisine. By barbecuing instead of baking, your kitchen will stay cooler and your fridge won't have to work as hard to keep food crisp.

By turning off or unplugging unused appliances, you can stop phantom energy loss and keep excess carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. You can also reduce the strain on the energy supply by running washers, dryers and dishwashers early in the morning, in the evening and on weekends.

Conserving energy isn't just about wires and light bulbs. By taking shorter showers or using a low-flow showerhead, you can cut costs on your next energy bill.

For those more serious about energy conservation, the Department of Public Service suggests switching to energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs and choosing ENERGY STAR products for household appliances. You can also install home insulation to cut energy costs year-round.
