for larger version       Keeping Children Safe This Summer Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer is urging parents to take the time to be informed about important safety issues to help prevent their children from being seriously injured while participating in outdoor activities this summer. "During the summer months, kids have more freedom and tend to push the boundaries a little more, which increases the opportunity for injury," Pheffer said. "Swimming, biking, walking, skating, and playing safely is our goal and prevention is the key." Pheffer noted that children ages fourteen and under will be rushed to the emergency rooms nearly three million times for serious injuries this summer. According to Safe Kids USA, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and protecting families from accidental injury, forty percent of all unintentional injury related deaths occur from May to August, with July being the deadliest time for unintentional childhood injuries. "In five summers, 2000-2004, eighty-two children ages fourteen and under died in New York from accidental drowning, an average of sixteen kids every summer," stated Alan Korn, Chief Counsel of the National Safe Kids organization. "Practically every one of those deaths could have been prevented." "Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but we must always remember to be safe while we are having fun," Pheffer said. "Whether it's exhibiting caution while barbecuing, wearing helmets while bicycling, or applying sunscreen at the beach, we cannot forget that safety first ensures a fun summer."
