Even the most infrequent visitor to the Surfside apartment buildings, located between Beach 105 Street and Beach 107 Street, can see that the parking areas and roadways within the three-building complex are under construction. Those who live in the building or visit more frequently know, however, that the construction has been going on for several years now, angering many of those residents who have been through a change of ownership and a long and divisive strike over the past year or so. The building complex includes One Beach 105 Street, 107-10 Shore Front Parkway and 106-20 Shore Front Parkway. Recently, a concerned tenant, who asked to remain anonymous because she fears retribution from the owners of the building, came to the Wave in an attempt to shed light on this seemingly unending project and the "disgraceful" conditions of the lot near Beach 106 Street.
The Wave paid a visit to the site and observed several children playing on the piles of concrete. On Wednesday of this week, the exit from One Beach 105 Street was abruptly closed. A sign at that location said that residents would now have to drive through the parking lots for the other two buildings to exit their building. In addition, there is no turn-around and motorists who enter the one-lane entranceway will now have no way out. Residents also complain of being inundated with dirt and dust covering their cars and often infiltrating their homes, covering furniture and windowsills. Tools, equipment, cinderblocks, unattended earth moving equipment, large wooden spools and piping scatter the lot at 106 Street, in addition to the large piles of broken concrete and dirt.
"This is not the way its supposed to be, especially with the high rents that we pay each month," one resident told The Wave. A spokesperson for the management told The Wave that "normal construction work" was being undertaken for the good of the residents and that, if they were patient, everything would be taken care of.
