At least that's true for the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society, which was awarded a $43,200 grant for their leading role in cleaning up the Jamaica Bay marshes, according to a June 7 press release. The grant was established from settlements, and is targeted at legal efforts to diminish spilling from water pollution control plants into the bay and to mitigate the impact JFK International Airport's fuel tanks have on the water. At a June 4 ceremony at the Bronx Zoo, The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded the grant to the Broad Channel chapter. The group was recognized for its leadership in Operation CleanSweep, a program that removes abandoned boats, docks, and other large debris from Jamaica Bay. CleanSweep, which is supported by volunteers from organizations such as the Jamaica Bay EcoWatchers and the Sierra Club, is dedicated to removing debris from the bay's marshes to enable its regeneration. If the marshland does not show progress after it is cleaned, volunteers will replant native plant species to spur growth. Other organizations, such as Eastern Queens Alliance, Inc., were also awarded funding for their work to purify the Jamaica Bay waters.
