Click Here for More Information Hearing to Blast MTA After urging the MTA to provide handicap accessibility in all Rockaway stations, Councilman James Sanders is holding a hearing to "blast the MTA." The hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 12 at 10 a.m. Sanders, the Committee on Transportation, and the Committee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Disability Services will convene to answer the question: "What is the MTA doing to make the subway system accessible to people with disabilities?" Although the MTA plans to make more subway stations handicap-accessible by 2011, Sanders believes they have not been adequately serving the disabled community. "I find it despicable that not one train station in my district is accessible for my seniors and handicapped constituents," Sanders said in a press release. In a recent letter to the MTA, Sanders cited the 1984 Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination in public programs and ensures that buildings are handicapaccessible.
"Although the MTAproposed in 2011 that some subway stations would be handicap-accessible, that would put us 46 years out of compliance with the 1984 Americans with Disabilities Act," Sanders said.
