for larger version       Sanders Introduces New Chief Of Staff To Community
After being without a chief of staff for a year, Councilman James Sanders Jr. has appointed a long-time resident and activist of Southeast Queens to the position. At his Birdsall Avenue office in Far Rockaway last week, Sanders introduced Michael Duncan to a small group of Rockaway residents who came to meet the new man. "My key responsibility will be looking into what is needed in the community," said Duncan. Duncan has a long list of accomplishments. He graduated from Baruch College, and is the president of the Rosedale Rockets Soccer Club. Duncan is a former PTA president for PS 195 and IS 231, the vice president of the Presidents' Council of School District 29 and a member of the Rosedale and Springfield/Rosedale Action Civics. Although he is new to Rockaway, Duncan is ready to hit the ground running to learn about the area. He has been acquainting himself with the area, and is arranging for community representatives Doris Jacobs, the TA president of Redfern Houses, and Floyd Smith of Concerned Citizens for Rockaway, to give him a tour.
"I've been running a Rosedale soccer team for the last 12 years," Duncan said. "You need commitment and volunteers. We need soccer, baseball…to keep these children active. "When I first started in Rosedale it was so lacking," he continued. "It is actually succeeding. I look forward to bringing programs out here." Sanders praised his new chief of staff in a press release. "I looked around for the best person for this position - a person with managerial experience, knowledge of community organizations, affable and able to bring people together," said Sanders. "After watching Duncan for years patiently working to build his community and unite the people of the 31st District, I am sure this is the right man for the job."
