In what he calls a major capital plan, State Senator Malcolm Smith announced that the subway stations along the 'A' line in Rockaway would receive an overhaul to fix what has become a crumbling system for riders. Smith made the announcement, which was met with huge applause, at a get-acquainted meeting between elected officials and residents of Arverne By The Sea on June 1. "They are going to fix up every single station along the 'A' line," said Smith, who added that he and Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer were able to push the restoration through. "All of this is committed. [I've spoken] with the new guy, Sander." Smith was referring to Elliot Sander, who was appointed the executive director and CEO of the MTA earlier this year by Governor Eliot Spitzer. The plan is slated to cost more than $100 million, with $38 million for structural work and $64 million for rehabilitation. Smith said no formal announcement is scheduled until the fall, and a call seeking comment from New York City Transit was not immediately returned. The Senator did point out that part of the work has already begun, as the Beach 116 Street Station has been undergoing a renovation for some time. The nine stations along the Rockaway route are at least 51 years old. Four stations - Beach 90, Beach 98, Beach 105 and Beach 116 Streets connect Rockaway Park with Broad Channel. Mott Avenue, along with Beach 25, Beach 36, Beach 44, Beach 60 and Beach 67 Streets join those areas to the mainland. Subway service to Rockaway Park and Wavecrest began on June 28, 1956. On January 16, 1958 the subway line was extended to include the Mott Avenue station in Far Rockaway.
