DOT Erects New 'Coastal Evacuation'Signs:Splits West End Down The Middle
The city's Department of Transportation placed new "Coastal Evacuation Route" signs on the west end of the peninsula last weekend. This sign, which was put up on Beach 117 Street, pointed drivers eastward to the Cross Bay Bridge for their trip to the Aqueduct Racetrack, the local distribution center under the city's hurricane evacuation plan. The signs pointing east were placed from Beach 129 Street to the bridge. Signs west of Beach 129 Street, however, point further west to the Marine Parkway Bridge, which the city says residents should use to get to the Belt Parkway and then to the racetrack. Neither route takes into account the fact that all of those roads flood regularly during heavy rains, nevertheless an impending hurricane necessitates evacuation.
