F.R.Youth Court Holds First Induction Ceremony
The event, which took place at the New York City Housing Authority's Ocean Bay Community Center, celebrated 22 local youths' completion of the intensive Youth Court training. After participation in the course (which local law professionals assist in facilitating) and passing the Youth Court's "Bar Exam", the members commit to six months of service on the Youth Court. Members will receive a $50 monthly stipend for their contributions. Far Rockaway Youth Court hearings will be held at the Goldie Maple Academy and the Ocean Bay Community Center. The Far Rockaway Youth Court is a teen led program whose goal is to use positive peer pressure to ensure that local youth receive the help they need to avoid further involvement in the justice system. The members hear real cases referred to the Far Rockaway Youth Court by the 100 and 101 Precincts. To resolve the cases, members will determine appropriate and fair sanctions, including community service, conflict resolution and goal setting workshops, and written assignments.
