NYPD Football Soaks FDNY For Fun Bowl Victory
By Elio Velez

On a soaking Saturday at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, the New York City Police Department got their revenge from last year's defeat at the hands of the Fire Department. The NYPD came back from a 10-0 second quarter deficit in the 35th Annual Fun City Bowl football game to decisively win 20-10.

Before a crowd of an estimated 2,500 people who braved the rainy weather conditions, FDNY stormed out to pardon the pun for a 10-0 lead.

After recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff in the first quarter, FDNY RB Paul Numan scored on an 11-yard touchdown to give his team a 7-0 advantage. With the NYPD giving up another turnover, FDNY kicker George Oostmeyer converted on a 35 yard field goal to make it 10-0 in the second quarter.

A fluke play at the end of the second half gave the NYPD the spark needed to make their comeback. With less than 30 seconds left on the FDNY 20 yard line, a botched snap on a field goal attempt by the NYPD caused the football to fall to loose on the ground. Kicker Tony Balcan picked it up and went storming down the sidelines alone and scored the touchdown to cut the lead to 10-7.

The momentum was all in NYPD's favor in the second half. QB Rand Littrell connected on a 52 yard play action touchdown pass to a wide open WR Kassiem Pope to make it 14-10 with 6:36 to go in the third quarter.

NYPD RB Demetrious Starling, a rookie on the team, made the most dazzling play of the afternoon. Starling got the hand off at the NYPD 20 yard line, spun twice on two attempted tackles by the FDNY and ran untouched down the sideline for a 20-10 lead.

NYPD starting offensive tackle Nate Brown, who is assigned to Transit District 23, was glad to regain bragging rights for the next year.

"It feels good. We had to hear it for a whole year about the loss. We didn't feel the pressure when we were down. We stuck together. We're a family," Brown said.
