Far Rockaway Man Attacks Woman To Steal Cell Phone
By Miriam Rosenberg

A Far Rockaway man chased a woman and then proceeded to punch her in the face as he stole her cell phone and then fled into a nearby apartment in Inwood last week.

Jamel Garris, 20, of 1302 Redfern Avenue was arrested on May 20 after he chased the victim into the Citi Gas Station on Sheridan Boulevard in Inwood, repeatedly punched her in the face and took her phone. Officers Marc Merckling and Kevin Donohue, of Nassau County's Fourth Precinct, arrested Garris after finding him hiding in a closet of an apartment in a complex located on Bayview Avenue.

Despite suffering contusions and abrasions, the victim - whom police did not identify - refused treatment.

Garris was arraigned on charges of robbery in the second degree and trespassing in the second degree on Monday. As of Tuesday, he was still being held on $125,000 bond or $60,000 in cash.
