American Flag Torn Down Near Belle Harbor Store
By Miriam Rosenberg

On Friday afternoon, the owner of Pet Spa in Belle Harbor - Rob Press - adjusts the American Flag he found thrown in the dirt behind his store that morning.

The last thing Rob Press expected on the morning of May 18, as he was preparing to open his new business, was to find that his American Flag had been torn down and thrown into the yard behind his store.

Press found his flagpole, that had proudly hung outside the entrance of The Pet Spa of Belle Harbor on Beach 129 Street, on the ground near the front door and the flag tossed away like a piece of garbage behind his store.

"The flag was rolled up in the back yard with dirt on it," said Press, who said he has had previous problems with graffiti, but nothing of this magnitude.

"In Rockaway, you don't throw the American Flag," Press said, who called the incident "a slap in the face."

"With all the firefighters and cops who live in this neighborhood, I don't understand why someone would do this - especially to the American flag."

Press stands beside some of the graffiti he has found on his property.
