Weiner: No Reason Not To Convert Taxicabs

More than a year ago, Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-Queens and Brooklyn) announced a plan to encourage Ford Motor Company to make a hybrid version of its Crown Victoria taxi. He released the following statement today in response to Mayor Bloomberg's proposal to make New York City's taxi fleet entirely hybrid by 2012.

"Hybrid technology is available and affordable, leaving no reason not to convert New York City's entire taxi fleet.

"Hybrids emit less pollution and save cabbies money at the pump. It simply makes environmental and business sense, and I applaud the City for taking this step."

After Weiner announced his plan to encourage Ford Motor Company to make a hybrid version of its Crown Victoria taxi, he invited constituents to reply to an online poll asking, "Should the federal and city governments demand that a hybrid version of these New York City taxis be designed?" Eighty six percent of the 2,000 respondents answered yes.

Currently, there are 13,000 cabs on the streets of New York City, 95% of them Ford Crown Victorias. In New York City alone, the Crown Victoria taxi fleet uses 48,482,353 gallons of gas each year. A similar size fleet of hybrid Crown Victorias would use at least 10,000,000 less gallons of gas, saving a substantial amount of money for individual taxi drivers.
