St. John's Lions Crowned King Of Queens Basketball
St. John's went undefeated for the season and beat the Lowell School Panthers in an exciting 43-42 win at the Elmcor Youth Center in Corona. St. John's made a late comeback and hit the game winning basket with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter to go up 43-42 and hoist the trophy. The Lions are made up of players who reside in the St. John's Boys Home. They played once a week starting in November of 2006 in a 10 team league which involves other programs from Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Lions finished the season at 20- 0 and made up for last year's disappointment in May of 2006. In their first campaign in the IBA, St. John's finished with a 16-4 record and narrowly lost to Summit in the championship game. The Lions practiced at MS 225 and played all of their league basketball games at Lost Battalion Hall in Rego Park. Antoine Morris, the head coach of St. John's, remarked to the Wave about his team's dogged dedication and commitment this season. "Some of the kids weren't doing well in their classes before the season started. They knew that if they didn't pass, they would be off the team," Morris said.
"They went on to pass their classes and they're doing well in school. It's a big accomplishment. I'm proud of this team."
