2007 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Season Arrives
By Joe McGivney

On Wednesday night, the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League will mark the beginning of its 17th season. The addition of seven new teams brings the grand total to 50 squads. The league also increased its roster to 650 players.

The new rosters are filled with long-time Rockaway neighbors and friends and we are thrilled to welcome them to the RBVL family. Say hello to new teams such as the Bay House Babes, Aviator Sports, the Wharf Rats, the Coral Reefers, bhyc.com, the Lobster House and the Dolan Gang.

The RBVL would like to welcome back our 2006 rookies who are now seasoned veterans: The Mighty Boosh, Boarders Surf Shop, McMahon's Irish Pub, Team Margarita and Simon Says Sea Bar. Of course, by seasoned veterans we don't mean they're volleyball pros. We just mean they know what time to show up and where to go for a cocktail after the matches.

We also welcome some new sponsors like Casino Towing and Auto Body Shop, the team formerly known as Abbracciamento's, the Bay House, Aviator Sports, the Wharf and the Lobster House.

This second consecutive year of expansion comes with a small dose of fear and trepidation. It means we need more equipment, referees and beach space, all of which are tough to come by. We will continue to ask for more help from you to make this all work smoothly. With a few more bodies lending a hand each week, we should be ok. The benefits of adding many of our local comrades to the fold should make it well worth the effort.

This Wednesday night is actually a practice night at the beach and the games will not count toward the final standings. Come out and shake off the cobwebs, stretch your groin muscles (and hamstrings if you are a N.Y. Yankees fan) and practice your 12 oz. curls. New teams (and anyone else who needs a refresher course) will be shown how to set up the net systems that we use. Dress warmly and pray for "No Rain!" After we finish playing ball we will head over to Healy's for the first party of the season. Rain or shine, the party is on! Additionally, uniforms and schedules will be given out at the bar at that time. If you have any outstanding administrative items to take care of, do so at Healy's. Once again we will have six divisions with varying levels of skill. Last year's final results were blended with roster additions and subtractions to produce groupings which we hope will be as competitive as ever. The 2007 divisional breakdown is listed at the end of the article.

On Wednesday, May 30, it will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 11 (The only exception that the league will play on July 3 and not on July 4.) Next week the full bar schedule for the season will be published in our weekly Wave article. Clear some time and drop in on all your favorite Rockaway haunts. Also, don't forget to check our website at www.rbvl.com. While you're waiting for the 2007 action to begin, you can look back at photos and stories from the past few seasons.

It will only be five days before we meet on the beach. If you have any questions before then please call Patty Moule at 917-566-2809 (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM.). Let the games begin! See you on the beach!
