Escaped Convict Busted For Grand Larceny
By Howard Schwach

A Far Rockaway man who was an escaped convict from an upstate prison was arrested last week for grand larceny after he allegedly made more than 100 phone calls threatening to kill the family of the people he called if they did not turn over an unspecified amount of money.

The local man, identified by Nassau County police as John Golom, 42, of 20-27 Seagirt Boulevard in the Wavecrest Gardens complex, reportedly called an unidentified Island Park man and demanded money, threatening the man and his family if he did not deliver.

The victim gave in to the demands and delivered the money to Golom at about 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, police say. The money was reportedly delivered at a Rockaway location.

The victim had called Nassau County Police, however, and Golom was arrested at his home about 45 minutes after the money changed hands.

A check by Detectives from Nassau County's Fourth Squad revealed that Golom had escaped from The Adirondack Correctional Facility in Ryebrook, New York, where he was incarcerated after being found guilty of fraud charges.

Police sources say that the calls were random and there is no indication that Golom and the victim had any contact prior to this incident.

Golom was arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of second degree grand larceny and second degree aggravated harassment.

A spokesman for the Nassau County District Attorney said that Golom will be held for the U.S. Marshalls, who will bring him back to prison pending his Nassau County trial.
