Mourners Make Mother's Day Visit To Rockaway's AA 587 Memorial
In what is expected to be an annual event, dozens of family members of those who died when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor killing all 260 on board the plane as well as five locals on the ground, came to Beach 116 Street and the boardwalk to pay their respects on Mother's day, May 13. The memorial, was dedicated last November 12 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Many of the visitors to the memorial brought flowers, which they placed in proximity to the names of their loved ones, which are carved into the stone walls that make up the memorial site.
Visitors to the memorial gather their large flower arrangements prior to placing them nearby the names of their relatives who died in the November 12, 2001 crash.
It was a very emotional time for some visitors who simply hugged relatives and stared at the names of the departed.
