String Of Burglaries Hit 'West Lawrence'
A cat burglar has been roaming the streets of Far Rockaway in a largely Orthodox Jewish area that residents call "West Lawrence" hitting three homes in the last five weeks, The Wave learned this week. Captain Brian McMahon, the commanding officer of the 101 Precinct, revealed the burglary pattern at the 101 Community Council's May meeting on Wednesday night. "We have two burglaries where the person entered through a rear window," said McMahon, who added that the thief strikes at night. "We've assigned additional police officers to that area. We have no idea who it is right now, but we are working on that problem." The area where the burglary team has been working centers on Empire Avenue and Reeds Lane. The Captain is advising those who live in the area to take preemptive action to protect their homes and valuables. "[Residents] should lock their windows," McMahon said. "If the window is locked [the burglars] go to the next house. If the window is open he'll go into the house."
