Three-Alarm Marsh Fire Closes Addabbo Bridge

A massive marsh fire that threatened nearby homes and the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge that connects Rockaway to the mainland of Queens, turned into a three-alarm blaze that closed down both the bridge and Cross Bay Boulevard for more than two hours on Friday afternoon, May 4. Firefighters from all over Queens and Brooklyn were called to fight the fire, which was declared under control late in the afternoon. The dense, black smoke from the raging fire could be seen clearly in Rockaway and as far north as the Belt Parkway, on which traffic was slowed by the smoke. Pictured, onlookers are moved off the bridge for their own safety. For more fire photos, see Page 94.
