Help Protect The Beach This Summer
Join Floatable Surveillance Program

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection Marine Sciences Section is seeking volunteers for its Beach Floatable Surveillance program this summer.

Residents can help save turtles, birds, fish and other marine life from ingesting items or becoming entangled in assorted litter. "Floatables" are waterborne waste materials, such as Styrofoam, balloons, medical waste, raw sewage and fishing line.

Beach monitors record the various types of debris found on their favorite beach on a weekly basis. They collect data from June 1 to October of 2007 for 20 minutes after high tide. Participants do not have to pick up or touch the floatables.

Volunteers will receive all materials necessary for monitoring, including letters of authorization and acknowledgement.
