Although the team won by a 10-point margin against the 113 Precinct for the Queens title, they lost to Staten Island by a score of 83-77 on April 14 in the citywide tournament. While winning games are important, the 101 Precinct believes in the old that 'winning isn't everything.' "We trying to bridge the gap between kids and police officers," Officer Lakeisha Smith, the precinct's youth officer and explorer advisor told The Wave. "Doing things like sports gives police a chance to interact with kids. We're seeing an improvement between cops and kids." Cops and Kids, one of the many programs under the Police Athletic League's umbrella, is an initiative that brings volunteer police officers and young people from the five boroughs together. Teams are created to represent their local precincts to compete against other police precincts in such sports as basketball, softball, volleyball and golf.
