for larger version       St.Virgilius Cadet Boys Get Off To Roaring Start The baseball season is back in full swing and the St. Virgilius Cadet boys from Broad Channel are off to a hot start. They won their opener on April 14 with a 10-6 victory over Our Lady of Hope. The Cadets displayed a little rust and some opening day jitters in the first inning when OLH scored 4 runs. But after that slow start, the boys from B.C. took over the game with big hits, productive outs and stellar defensive plays. Big pitching from starter Matt Gericke, relief pitcher Steve Trudden and the team's closer Anthony "Lights Out" Ciambriello were more than enough to hold on to the victory. The Boys from B.C took the field for the second time on April 21 and improved their record to 2-0 with a lop-sided 17-0 victory over St. Margaret's. Steve Trudden took the mound and threw a 1-hitter into the 5th inning when the game was called. Ciambriello went 3-4 and a homerun short of the cycle. Steve Ellis also had 3 hits including a big triple, all of which drove in big runs. Up and down the order, big hits and smart base running by Keith Harnisher, John Galimi, Jack Tubridy, Matt Gericke, Anthony Cani, Tom Cani, Jesse Parente, Tomas Krohn, Johnny Wags, Jose Garcia and Matt Holgate contributed to the victory. On April 22, the boys took the field again and were put to the test. With their undefeated record on the line and the sun beating down, Matt Gericke took to the mound for St. Virgilius. The bats seemed a little lazy at first but great pitching and stellar defensive plays controlled the game. The bats eventually woke up and great plays by Harnisher, Krohn, Galimi in the field as well as the Cani brothers behind the plate kept the shut-out alive. Once again, "Lights Out" Ciambriello came in to slam the door and St. V. went on to a 5-0 victory over an over-matched OLMM.
The boys have been playing great and keep improving with each week. Everyone is contributing on the field. Manager John Bil and coaches Joe Traegler and Jimmy Trudden couldn't be more proud of the team. Come out and cheer them on when they take on St. Joseph's on April 28.
