for larger version       Brazil Shines As Peninsula Cup Soccer Kicks Off
The Peninsula World Cup is a joint venture between St. Thomas More and St. Francis de Sales. Almost 500 children are competing in eight age groups. Each team is named for a World Cup country. All games are played at Ft. Tilden or Roxbury. With six divisions in action, the Brazil teams posted a 4-1-1 record. In the boys' second and third grade division, England topped Brazil 2-1, Italy beat Spain 4-2 and Germany bested Ireland 5-0. In the boys' fourth and fifth grade division, Chris Ray netted a hat trick and Eric McKeown tallied his first career goal and an assist in Spain's 5-2 triumph over Italy. Patrick Feimer also scored for Spain. Dinytro Mysak was perfect in goal. Brazil edged England 3- 2 despite two goals by Zack Willis. Connor Ryan and Connor Pfister assisted on Zach's goals.
On the ladies' side, Germany won a thrilling second and third grade game 1-0 over Ireland when Carolyn Good scored in the last 15 seconds. Brazil and England battled to a 3-3 tie. Shannon Rochelle scored twice and Catherine Gibson once for England. Emily Carlton scored twice and Kelly Davan once for Brazil. Spain blanked Italy 2-0. In the girls' fourth and fifth grade division, Therese Boyle broke a scoreless tie with two second-half goals and Celeste Lynch added the final tally as Brazil triumphed 3-0 over Spain. In the boys' sixth to eighth grade division, Brazil beat England 4-2 and Ireland edged Italy 3-2.
The fourth and fifth grade girls kicked off the second week of action on Monday. Spain topped Ireland 4-2 on goals by Taylor Veigh (2), Mary Ellen Woods and Megan Kirk. Brittany Scheriff netted two for Ireland. Italy nipped Brazil 2-1 in the nightcap behind goals by Cassie Moriarty and Daisy Trusttum.
