Local Woman Injured In DWI Accident

For Gail Rhodes, her typical day ended at 2:35 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, when she was hit by a car as she stepped out of her Pontiac automobile at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 53 Street. Police say that Krik Blake, 39, a West Hempstead resident, was driving his 1982 Lincoln westbound on Beach Channel Drive "in excess of the posted speed limit" when he struck Rhodes. A spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Blake admitted to police that he had been involved in the accident, but "that he couldn't believe that he had done it." Police say that they observed several empty beer cans in Blake's car and that he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. Court records show that an intoxilyzer test administered to Blake resulted in a blood alcohol reading of .156 percent, nearly two times the legal New York State limit of .08. According to Brown's office, Blake has been charged in Queens Supreme Court with vehicle assault in the second degree and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Pictured, police officers from the NYPD's Accident Investigation Squad take a look at Blake's Lincoln. Rhodes was transported to the Peninsula Hospital Center with severe injuries to her head, hip and legs. At PHC, Rhodes' airway was opened and she was stabilized. She was then transported to North Shore Hospital, where, sources say, she remains in critical condition.
