A Failure To Listen To The Voice Of The People

It was nice of city officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) and the Department of Traffic (DOT) to come to Broad Channel on Tuesday night for a special meeting of the City Council's Transportation Committee. The meeting was set to address the problems faced by Broad Channel and Rockaway residents in their daily commute to Manhattan as well as other transportation issues. Despite the scoffs of long-time Rockaway residents that nobody would show up to complain, the meeting was packed with angry local residents who wanted to complain about transportation to and from the peninsula. Unfortunately, the city officials did not stick around to listen to them. The representatives from the city agencies made their prepared speeches to the Council committee and then quickly left. By the time local were given a chance to speak, they were long gone. This is not the way it should work. Residents believed they would have a chance to speak and have their concerns addressed by the city officials present at the meeting. As it turns out, their complaints fell on ears that were no longer present. We understand that a record was made and that locals had to chance to submit written comments and complaints. That is not the same. Perhaps the city agencies should come back, and this time they should stick around to hear what the people have to say.
