for larger version       Smith Obtains Additional Funding For JCCRP State Senator Malcolm A. Smith had announced his successful efforts to secure a $22,000 increase in funding for the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula (JCCRP). The extra funding is part of a $3.4 million increase in funding to the Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP) obtained by the Legislature in the 2007-08 fiscal year budget. As a result of the new figures, JCCRP received a total of $87,000 for their work in helping current and prospective homeowners in the Rockaways. "When we make the commitment to preserve our neighborhoods, we're not only preserving a piece of history, we're also providing more housing opportunities to low and moderate income residents," Smith said. Formed in 1972, the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula is an organization of more than 40 Jewish groups that serve the Rockaways. While their original focus was offering neighborhood preservation services, it has broadened to provide services, from housing to naturalization counseling, food distribution, managed care assistance and summer camp scholarships. "I have long been an admirer of the JCCRP and their commitment to helping those in need, regardless of religious belief," continued Smith. "That's why I was pleased to be able to obtain assistance for the JCCRP so that they can continue in their worthwhile efforts." Senator Smith said the process of obtaining money for JCCRP is a small part of a larger obligation to ensure that constituents and organizations receive the funding they need. "I enthusiastically support anything that improves our neighborhoods, and the lives of the people who live and work in them," Smith said. "I'm proud to work in Albany every day to help those who help others."
