Baskin-Robbins To Host 31 Cent Scoop Night
Inaugural Event Honors Fallen Firefighters
By Brian Magoolaghan

A scoop of Cherries Jubilee will cost just 31 cents when Baskin-Robbins hosts 31 Cent Scoop Night on Wednesday, May 2.

Don't be alarmed if you see fire trucks and some of New York's Bravest at Baskin-Robbins next Wednesday night, the ice cream chain is honoring firefighters and kicking off the summer season early with a special event at all of its stores, including three in Rockaway.

Baskin-Robbins is inviting ice cream lovers to stop by on Wednesday, May 2 from 5 to 10 p.m., when the company hosts 31 Cent Scoop Night. As part of the inaugural event, a 2.5-ounce scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip, Cherries Jubilee, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Old Fashioned Butter Pecan, Rocky Road, the perennial favorites Chocolate, Vanilla or Very Berry Strawberry, or one of many other flavors in Baskin-Robbins' "flavor library" will cost - you guessed it - 31 cents (plus tax of course).

The "world's largest chain of ice cream specialty stores" will also make a $100,000 donation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, a nonprofit organization that honors fallen firefighters and assists their families and coworkers, according to the company.

The NFFF also received a $250,000 grant from the parent company of Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin' Donuts, Dunkin' Brands.

Rockaway's Baskin-Robbins franchisees were excitedly preparing for the event this week.

"I better have enough ice cream!" said Andrew Langer, who owns three Baskin-Robbins franchises, including two in Rockaway. "I'll do 1,000 scoops in each store," he added.

Langer said that a standard 3-gallon ice cream container - the ones in the Baskin-Robbins display freezer - yields about 100 scoops. "I have to speak to my managers and make sure they're stocked."

Langer also said he was going to invite local firefighters to participate in the event. He envisioned a combination of business and pleasure for them - a little fire safety and a little ice cream scooping perhaps.

Rockaway franchisee Laeeq Bajwa said the event is also about saying "thank you" to customers.

"This event gives us a wonderful opportunity to show our loyal customers our appreciation," said Bajwa.

Rockaway's Baskin-Robbins stores are located at 269 Beach 116 Street, 4901 Beach Channel Drive and 239 Beach 20 Street.
