Grenade Found On Beach Club Roof

Workers for the Lobster House were measuring the air conditioning units on the roof of the abandoned Beach Club catering hall on Beach 116 Street at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday night when they noticed a hand grenade sitting on the corner of the roof. They notified owner Kenny Good, who came to the scene and called 911. Police, firefighters and EMS workers responded. Pictured, police from the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit await the Bomb Squad to remove the device. Photos by Howard Schwach.
The NYPD's Bomb Squad van, pictured here, responded about an hour later and took the device to Rodman's Neck in the Bronx, where it was tested and found to be inert. Both Good and police declined to speculate on how the grenade might have found its way to the roof or how long it had been in place.
