St Virgilius/B.C.A.C. Softball Girls Sweep On Opening Day

The St Virgilius /Broad Channel Athletic Club girls' Intermediate softball team opened the 2007 season Saturday April 14 by winning both sides of a doubleheader against Sacred Heart of Bayside.

In the first game, the girls were on the scoreboard in the first inning when Christina Sullivan hit a bases loaded single driving in two runs. A fast bottom of the inning saw St. Virgilius come up in the top of the second inning and quickly pick up where they left off.

Caitlin Mammes reached base on a fielder's choice and two more runs were scored. Sacred Heart scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 4-2 game. From this point on the game became a pure defensive struggle until the sixth inning when St. Virgilius' Patricia Kelly hit a double scoring Amy Zeller. Katie Gill pitched all seven innings allowing only two runs on ten hits with two strikeouts. Defensively the infield looked solid recording 16 outs including catcher Katie Mc Intyre grabbing three foul balls. Outfielders Sydney Acevedo and Amanda Yodice pulled in a couple of long fly balls that could have scored runs for Sacred Heart. Kaitlyn Manzi in short centerfield closed off the middle of the field from any short fly balls.

Game two started with St. Virgilius again managing to put a run on the board against a fast Sacred Heart pitcher when Shannon Minihane hit a single to drive in Amanda Yodice. In the third inning the girls loaded the bases with their first three batters and were driven in by hits from Shannon Minihane, Sydney Acevedo and Courtney Gallagher for three runs.

The fourth inning would be the one where the girls would really open up the score. Caitlin Mammes hit a three run home run with Christina Servello and Nancy Soliman on base for a 7-0 lead. Amy Zeller, Regina Hemminger and Amanda Yodice would all draw walks to load the bases. Patricia Kelly and Shannon Minihane then drove in two runs each with hits for an 11-0 lead. St. Virgilius held Sacred Heart scoreless for the first six innings of play with a final score of 11-1.

Shannon Minihane pitched all seven innings allowing one run on eight hits. A great defensive performance was turned in by all the girls allowing only three runs in two games. The St. Virgilius/B.C.A.C. Intermediate girls' next game is Saturday April 22 at 8:00 a.m. in Glendale.
