USPS Should Investigate Peninsula's Post Offices

The saga at the Far Rockaway Post Office, which has been chronicled on the front page of The Wave for the past two weeks, may seem like a soap opera to many, but it has its serious side. Delivering the mail is a serious task. There are many people in Rockaway who depend on the mail for their Social Security checks, for paychecks, for pension checks, for medical supplies, and for pharmaceuticals. Even a one day delay in receiving their mail can mean a real hardship for those people. For many months, The Wave has been receiving complaints about mail delivery throughout the peninsula. There are allegations of incompetence, as Congressman Gregory Meeks charges, and apparent false accusations used as a weapon by mail carriers against supervisors, which dissuaded them from doing their job. In either case, the situation is intolerable and the USPS should investigate the entire structure of the peninsula's post offices and remediate whatever is necessary. There is no doubt that the delivery service has been sporadic and that service in the branch post offices is tenuous at best. Something needs to be done about restoring this vital service to a proper level.
