for larger version       Citizenship Application Event April 20 New York City residents are invited to a free citizenship application assistance event at the York College Academic Core Atrium, 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard in Jamaica, on Friday, April 20 from 12 to 4 p.m., according to State Senator Malcolm A. Smith. "CUNY established the Citizenship and Immigration Project in 1997 to address the growing need for immigration services among their foreign-born students, faculty and staff," Senator Smith said. "In keeping with their strong commitment to community service, they later expanded the program to assist all New Yorkers with immigration needs." The "Citizenship Now!" event features experienced immigration lawyers and other personnel who will be available to help fill out application forms for those who have: + Resided in the United States as a permanent resident for five years; or for three years of permanent residents if married to and living with a U.S. citizen; + Been physically present in the U.S. for half of the five or three-year period; + Reached the age of at least 18 years. "For persons who meet the eligibility requirements, this is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and get solid advice from people who really understand the complex inner workings of our citizenship application process," Senator Smith said. "The more information you can get about immigration and citizenship, the better off you will be in the long run." Senator Smith noted there are a number of legal documents that may be needed to assist CUNY immigration professionals with completing application forms. He recommends bringing the following to the application assistance event: + Green Card; + All passports since obtaining a Green Card; + Marriage/Divorce history; + Son/Daughter information (Date of birth); + All previous home addresses; + Employment history; + Criminal history (if applicable) The CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project also offers services throughout the year at centers located throughout the five boroughs. "Many people have difficulty with the citizenship application process, and some go to lawyers who charge exorbitant feeds for basically filling out a form," Smith said. "The CUNY Citizenship Now! program fills a vital need in our community."
