The screening will be the first time that a large public audience has the chance to see about 15 to 20 minutes of footage from "The Bungalows of Rockaway," a documentary film by Jennifer Callahan and Elizabeth Logan Harris. Callahan recently described the footage as "an interesting mix of archive and contemporary shots, [including] historians and some bungalow residents. "It's the first time this clip will screen with all this material we've been collecting these past one and a half years," Callahan told The Wave. "Our clip will include images from [Wave Historian and author] Emil Lucev's files, [historian] Vincent Seyfried's files, 19th century city maps, archival images from the Long Island Division at the Queens Public Library, images from the Parks Department, and the Municipal Archives, and portions of different interviews we've conducted over the last year." Wave readers will remember that the filmmaking team visited City Hall late last year and interviewed City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and her father, Lawrence, who are former summer residents. Harris said that interview was another surprise along their "amazing odyssey" to tell the story of the peninsula's bungalows. "We're also planning on interviewing British historian Anthony D. King, who wrote "The Bungalow: The Production of a Global Culture," said Callahan. "He's an architectural historian and sociologist… who can speak on the origins of the bungalow as an architectural form, and the global significance of the growth of working-class bungalow seaside communities in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Rockaway bungalows are part of this global trend." The team said their final cut will be an hour long and may be broadcast on television. The Literary Arts Festival, sponsored by the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, is being held at Fort Tilden on Sunday, April 22. The clip of "The Bungalows of Rockaway" will unreel between 3 and 4 p.m. at the Post Theater, according to Callahan.
