Church Van Rolls, Sends Driver To Hospital

The driver of a church shuttle van was injured Monday, after he apparently lost control of the vehicle, which struck a utility pole and wound up on its side on the median between Rockaway Freeway and Arverne Boulevard on Beach 56 Street. Although the accident occurred just a few blocks from Peninsula Hospital Center, the unidentified man driving the van was taken by ambulance to St. John's Episcopal Hospital, where there is a trauma center. The extent of the man's injuries was not known at press time. The NYPD called in LIPA because the damaged utility pole was precariously slumped at a 60-degree angle to the street and appeared to be in danger of falling onto Rockaway Freeway, which was closed for more than an hour.
