Rockaway Artists Aliance Hosts 'The BIG Show' And 'Of Land And Sea' At Fort Tilden

The BIG Show" and "Of Land And Sea" are not only the latest artistic exhibitions to hit the Rockaways, but also the perfect description as the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, and the Rockaway Theatre Company all come together at the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) for a truly BIG Four R weekend at Fort Tilden, Queens. Opening on Saturday April 21 both of these exciting gallery entries promise a wealth of unique images as artists of all kinds invite the viewer into a world of imagination and talent.

Then on Sunday April 22 these fine exhibitions provide the showcase and backdrop for dozens of writers and publishing professionals as well as spoken word and musical performers as RoCA celebrates the first ever Rockaway Music and Arts Council Literary Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Festival will utilize RAA's sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 galleries and outdoor Moonstage, while the Rockaway Theatre Company's Post Theatre will present film selections from the works of invited scriptwriters. It promises to be one big and busy, exciting Sunday.

Admission is free to both exhibitions and all events and ample free parking is available. "Of Land And Sea" and "The BIG Show" will also be celebrating with a festive 'opening' reception on Sunday April 29 from 1-3 p.m. Many of the artists will be on hand and refreshments as well as entertainment will be provided.

"The BIG Show" itself has invited artists to 'think big' and dare to bring out their biggest ideas in a show of immeasurable proportions. Open to all media: drawing, painting, watercolor, photography, sculpture, installation, video, quilting, literature and more, all works are a minimum of six feet. "The BIG Show" will be presented in the sTudio 7 gallery and outdoor sculpture garden and is open to any and all themes.

"Of Land And Sea" celebrates and explores the richness of nature through art.

Whether depicting the sun's rays penetrating the deep forest, swirling green tides after a storm or dandelions determinedly growing up through busy city streets, using painting, watercolor, drawing, mixed media, photography, video, quilt, literature, sculpture and more, each artist is challenged to bring his or her own unique point of view to the subject. On view in the RAA's more intimate sTudio 6 gallery, "Of Land And Sea" is also perfectly presented against the beauty of the Rockaway beaches and Atlantic shore and the wide blue Jamaica Bay. The Rockaway Artists Alliance's "Of Land And Sea" and "The BIG Show" are juried exhibitions and both represent works selected from an impressive variety of high quality submissions.

"Of Land And Sea" and "The BIG Show" are presented in partnership with The National Park Service/ Gateway National Recreation Area.

Gallery hours are Saturday 12-4p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. and by appointment. For information call (718) 474-0861, e-mail rockart116@aol.com or visit www.rockawayartistsalliance. org.
