Click Here for More Information State Senators Tout New State Budget The recently passed 2007-2008 State Budget offers record spending for education, safeguards the uninsured and restores cuts to the health care system proposed by Governor Eliot Spitzer. That was the message from State Senators Malcolm Smith and Shirley Huntley in separate press releases on Wednesday. "Not only have we begun to rectify years of past underfunding, but this budget coming on the heels of the CFE [Campaign For Fiscal Equity] ruling, presented a unique opportunity to reform our method of calculating state aid allotments [to schools] going forward," said Smith. The budget also provides for increased aid toward reducing class-size, giving students more individual attention. In addition, the budget calls for doubling the number of charter schools in the state to 200, with 50 of the new schools to be located in New York City. "With the help of Governor Eliot Spitzer and our Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith, we put patients in our community first by allocating more healthcare dollars based on the needs of patients. We put children first by expanding Child Health Plus so we can insure nearly all of New York's 400,000 uninsured children, including many who live in our community."
